Entre las muchas interpretaciones de La Gran Ola de Kanagawa, Hokusai representa la fuerza de lo efímero frente a lo permanente con tinta y color. Nami convierte esa misma imagen a través de una retícula de vértices: cada uno traduce, vía código, su valor de color en rotación sobre los tres ejes. Es abstracción geométrica en el sentido más contemporáneo, pero el código aquí es sólo un paso intermedio: resuelve la imagen en su estructura matemática para que vuelva a tomar forma, en volumen, en un solo tono de acrílico opalino. Es continuidad de un minimalismo que Oriente trabajó durante siglos, donde abstraer es una forma de profundizar. La superficie cambia con la luz del día y con el punto de vista de quien la observa.

Among the many readings of The Great Wave off Kanagawa, Hokusai captures the force of the impermanent against the permanent, in ink and color. Nami converts that same image through a grid of vertices: each one translates, through code, its color value into rotation across the three axes. It is geometric abstraction in the most contemporary sense, but the code here is only a middle step: it resolves the image into its mathematical structure so it can take shape again, in volume, in a single tone of opaline acrylic. It continues a minimalism that the East refined over centuries, where to abstract is a way of going deeper. The surface shifts with the light of day and with the viewer's own position.

Fatamorgana explora dinámicas de control, orden impuesto y percepción. Parte de una retícula regular, la forma que muchas veces se ha usado para imponer un orden rígido. Es heredera de una larga tradición del arte cinético y óptico que exploró lo mismo, casi siempre en dos dimensiones. Por un lado, se subvierte esa estructura impuesta, desde adentro, alterando ese orden pieza por pieza y generando un nuevo sistema relacional emergente sin seguir una progresión simple. Por otro lado, la tercera dimensión permite que los elementos se conecten con un elemento ajeno y magnífico: la luz, que añade relaciones aún más indescifrables e incontrolables, ya que están en constante cambio según el momento del día y desde dónde se observe. Cada triángulo vive dentro de su propio cuadrado, y gira sobre el centro del cuadrado: una sola regla, repetida cientos de veces. Se diseñó un algoritmo que puso esa regla a prueba una y otra vez, generando todo un campo de resultados posibles, hasta que alguien, al observarlos uno a uno, se dijo: esta es. De ahí en adelante, todo lo demás fue consecuencia.

Es una sola operación simple que, al repetirse, deja de parecerlo. La repetición crea la variedad. Y lo que empieza como una regla matemática termina siendo un juego entre el algoritmo y el humano. Los dos co-creando.

El acero es un solo color, pero en la pieza nunca lo ves así: cada aleta se levanta a una altura distinta, la luz del día golpea cada una en un ángulo distinto y las vecinas se alteran entre sí. Un color se convierte en un espectro entero de tonos de metal que cambia contigo, con la hora, con dónde te paras. ¿Y si el vacío fuera creativo?

Desde hace décadas, los astrónomos notaron que las galaxias giran demasiado rápido para la masa visible que las sostiene, algo invisible tiene que estar ahí, deteniéndolas de deshacerse. Le llamaron materia oscura. No emite luz, no se puede fotografiar, y sin embargo constituye la mayor parte de lo que existe. Solo se sabe que está ahí por lo que provoca en lo que sí podemos ver.

Esta pieza nace de esa misma idea: se creó un campo paramétrico con fuerzas magnéticas simuladas que nunca se muestran a sí mismas, solo el efecto que dejan en el metal. De un lado, algo estalla, se expande hacia afuera. Del otro, se enrolla y forma un remolino. El centro parece vacío, pero es ahí donde la fuerza invisible tiene más intensidad.

What if emptiness were creative?

For decades, astronomers noticed that galaxies rotate too fast for the visible mass that holds them together, something invisible had to be there, keeping them from flying apart. They called it dark matter. It emits no light, it can't be photographed, and yet it makes up most of what exists. It's only known to be there by what it causes in what we can see.

This piece comes from that same idea: a parametric field was created with simulated magnetic forces that never show themselves, only the effect they leave on the metal. On one side, something bursts, expanding outward. On the other, it coils and forms a whirlpool. The center looks empty, but that's where the invisible force is most intense.

Architectural services from conception to completion

This glassed bridge with a parametric skin connects two halls inside the former Post Office Building, one of the most important heritage structures of Guatemala City, The project also transforms a former inaccesible light shaft into a scenario for various activities and performances. This structure was fabricated by young students of the Guatemala Workshop School sponsored by the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation and Guatemala City Hall.
